One plate. Pure copper. Water the way nature intended.

Rest it in your matka, dispenser, or storage vessel overnight, and turn ordinary drinking water into Tamra Jal — the copper-enriched water Indian households have trusted for three thousand years.

The problem

Modern water is clean. But is it alive?

Reverse osmosis and ultraviolet purification made our water safe — and in doing so stripped away the trace minerals our bodies evolved alongside. What reaches your glass is purified of contaminants, but also of character.

Ayurveda holds that all creation arises from five Tattwas, and among them Jal — water — is the great carrier, moving nourishment and vitality through every cell. The Charaka and Sushruta Samhita describe resting drinking water in copper as Tamra Jal Sevan: to kindle the digestive fire, harmonise the doshas, and cleanse gently each day. Tattwas revives that ritual — not as a bottle for one, but as a plate for the whole home.

One plate. Every vessel. Measured.

The plate is a single fixed size — 11.8 inches long — and it does not shrink to fit. The same plate rests in a small household matka or a large family pot; what changes is the water around it. More water means more dilution, which is exactly what the table below records.

The plate is one fixed size and is drawn identically in all three pots. The pots are shown at true scale relative to one another (5 : 10 : 15) — not to the plate, since a real 5-litre matka is too small to hold an 11.8-inch plate. In practice the plate needs a mouth wider than 3.2 inches and about 12 inches of water depth, then rests against the inside wall. Note how much more water sits above the plate as the pot grows — that is the dilution measured below.

Estimated dissolved copper in milligrams per litre. Research-based engineering estimates for the Tattwas plate (11.8 × 3.2 × 0.04 inches, 225 grams) in neutral drinking water — estimates only, not laboratory measurements. Green rows are the recommended zone, comfortably below every limit. The amber row reaches the United States Environmental Protection Agency action level of 1.3 mg/L at its upper value — avoid. Thresholds: EPA action level 1.3 mg/L · World Health Organization guideline 2.0 mg/L · bitter taste at approximately 2.5 mg/L. * One-hour values are extrapolated from the four-hour to sixteen-hour trend; the source data begins at four hours.

Three steps to Tamra Jal

1

Place

Rinse the plate and stand it in a clean 10–15 litre vessel.

2

Rest 8–12 hours

Let the water sit undisturbed overnight as copper ions release slowly.

3

Pour & begin

Naturally enriched water, for everyone at the table.

Copper's antimicrobial action — the oligodynamic effect — is the same reason hospitals fit copper-alloy handles and rails. A note on how we use the word proven: the antimicrobial water-quality findings are peer-reviewed, and we say proven there and mean it. The traditional references (Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Dr. Vasant Lad, Dr. Robert Svoboda) describe and endorse the tradition, but they are not clinical trials. That distinction is deliberate.

Care, and when not to use it.

🧼 Care

Rinse at every refill. Once a week, rub with lemon and salt — or tamarind, the traditional way — then rinse and dry; this is a safety step, not a cosmetic one. A warm brown patina is normal. A green or blue-green crust is not — that is verdigris, and it must be scrubbed off before use. Never use the plate with lemon water, buttermilk, juice or any acidic drink, and never with hot water: both strip copper far too aggressively.

⛔ Do not use

Wilson's disease — a genetic disorder in which the body cannot excrete copper. Anyone diagnosed, or on copper-chelation therapy, must strictly avoid copper-enriched water. Infants under 1 year — never prepare formula or feed a baby with it; an infant's liver cannot yet regulate copper. Use plain boiled or filtered water.

🩺 Consult your doctor first

Liver conditions (cirrhosis, hepatitis, fatty liver) or chronic kidney disease — the liver clears copper, and if impaired it can accumulate. Children aged 1–5, whose safe limit is far lower than an adult's — as little as 1 mg per day at ages 1–3; never as their only water. Pregnancy or breastfeeding, and anyone taking a copper supplement or multivitamin, because it all adds up.

✅ The safe zone

A healthy adult using a 10–15 litre vessel rested 8–12 hours gets roughly 0.13–0.60 milligrams of copper per litre — well inside the World Health Organization guideline of 2.0 mg/L, and a sensible contribution toward the 0.9 mg adult daily requirement. Your body has a built-in warning: copper turns water bitter or metallic above roughly 2.5 mg/L. If your water tastes metallic it is too concentrated — shorten the soak or use a larger vessel.

Quick answers

How do I clean it?

Rinse at every refill. Once a week, rub with lemon and salt — or tamarind, the traditional way — then rinse and dry. This is a safety step, not a cosmetic one.

It has turned brown. Is that a problem?

A warm brown patina is normal and harmless. A green or blue-green crust is not — that is verdigris, and it must be scrubbed off before use.

Can I use it with lemon water or buttermilk?

No. Never use the plate with lemon water, buttermilk, juice or any acidic drink, and never with hot water. Both strip copper far too aggressively.

How is this better than a copper bottle?

A bottle enriches about a litre for one person. The plate enriches a 10–15 litre vessel for the whole household, keeps the vessel you already own, and wipes flat to clean.

Does the plate fit a 5 litre matka?

The plate is one fixed size — 11.8 inches long — and does not shrink to fit. It needs a mouth wider than 3.2 inches and about 12 inches of water depth, then rests against the inside wall. A real 5-litre matka is usually too small.

One plate. One vessel. One timeless ritual.

Every family deserves its Tamra Jal.
