We've insulated ourselves
from the ground beneath us.
For nearly all of human history, bare skin touched the earth constantly — walking barefoot, sleeping on hides and straw, working the soil. Rubber and synthetic-soled shoes, elevated buildings, and asphalt have quietly ended that contact. Today an estimated 95% of shoes have synthetic soles that block the earth's charge from reaching the body. At the same time, our homes are dense with AC wiring and electronics that induce a small, constant alternating voltage onto anyone not connected to the earth.
Clint Ober, the modern-day pioneer of grounding, traced his own thinking on this back to a simple observation: a tour bus of people wearing identical white sneakers, all cut off from the ground by the same synthetic sole. It's the reason he came to call the rubber-soled shoe one of the most disruptive inventions for our everyday connection to the earth.

Twenty years of research.
In the late 1990s, Clint Ober — then a retired cable television executive — began asking whether losing everyday skin contact with the earth might be quietly affecting human health. Over the next two decades he funded and coordinated research with cardiologists, physicists, and biologists across multiple universities and clinics.
In 2010, Ober co-authored Earthing: The Most Important Health Discovery Ever? with cardiologist Dr. Stephen Sinatra and journalist Martin Zucker. The practice later became the subject of The Earthing Movie (2019) — more on that later in this dossier.

06 · How it grounds you
Measured, not mystical.
Every home has some level of induced AC "body voltage" — a small alternating charge picked up from nearby wiring and appliances even when you touch nothing. Grounding equalizes that charge with the earth. Independent testing has recorded body voltage dropping by as much as 99% after grounding — from roughly 1.99 V to 0.02 V in one measured example. Researchers consider a connection well-grounded when it cuts body voltage by a factor of 20 or more.

07 · EMF & body voltage protection
Does it protect you
from EMF?
Every home has low-level electromagnetic fields (EMF) — from wiring, chargers, routers, lamps, and appliances. Ungrounded, your body can act like an antenna, picking up a small induced AC voltage from these fields. Grounding gives that charge a path to discharge into the earth instead of building up on your skin.
Fifty participants were exposed to EMFs from a printer, scanner, cordless phone, lamp, computer, and monitor — all switched on. Normal household EMF levels were too low to produce harmful currents once participants were grounded, and grounding measurably reduced the induced body voltage in every case.

Worth being precise about what this does and doesn't mean: grounding does not block or shield external EMF radiation from reaching you the way an enclosed metal shield would. What it does is give your body's own induced static and AC charge a low-resistance path to equalize with the earth, so voltage doesn't build up on your skin. Some sources describe this loosely as a "Faraday-cage-like" effect — the more precise, evidence-backed description is reduced induced body voltage, not blocked exposure.

08 · Conductivity & continuity
Two words that decide
whether it actually works.
Conductivity is how easily electrons move through the mat's surface. Our carbon-infused layer is woven for low surface resistance, so electrons travel from your skin to the cord with almost no resistance to slow them down. The lower the resistance reading, the more efficiently the mat can equalize your body with the earth.
Continuity is different: it's not about how well the mat conducts, but whether the conductive path is unbroken — surface, snap, cord, and plug all the way to the ground pin. A mat can be highly conductive in one spot and still fail if continuity breaks anywhere along that chain, the way a single cut wire kills a whole circuit. 09 · Grounded in sport
Why recovery teams
started paying attention.
The most-cited real-world account of grounding in professional sport comes from Dr. Jeff Spencer, a sports chiropractor named Sports Chiropractor of the Year in 2004, who worked with elite cycling teams — including the U.S. Postal Service and Discovery Channel Pro Cycling squads — through multiple Tour de France campaigns. He introduced grounding sleep systems and patches into the team's overnight recovery routine.
Spencer has described grounding as an indispensable recovery tool across his career treating elite athletes — reporting shorter recovery windows between race stages, less muscle soreness and fatigue, and faster healing of cuts, strains, and other in-competition injuries when athletes slept grounded.

The controlled research backs up parts of this picture: a triple-blinded study found grounded sleeping aided recovery after intensive eccentric muscle loading, and a separate RCT on massage therapists — professionals whose bodies absorb daily physical strain much like athletes' — found reduced pain and better quality-of-life scores among those grounded.

10 · Blood flow & inflammation
What "thinner blood"
actually means here.
In a pilot study, healthy subjects were grounded for two hours via electrode patches wired to a rod in the earth. Blood samples taken before and after showed red blood cells carrying a higher surface electrical charge (zeta potential) — up nearly threefold on average — which made them repel each other rather than clump together. A separate double-blind trial replicated the effect using a grounded yoga mat during exercise.
Less clumping means blood flows with less resistance — lower viscosity — the same underlying property blood-thinning medications target, though grounding works through a different, non-pharmacological mechanism: electrical charge, not anticoagulant chemistry. It should not be treated as a substitute for prescribed blood thinners.

A broader review pooled evidence on inflammation directly: researchers proposed that the earth's surface electrons act like natural antioxidants, neutralizing the free radicals that drive chronic low-grade inflammation, and pointed to faster wound-healing and reduced pain markers in small studies of grounded subjects.

11 · Thermal imaging & circulation
What a thermal camera
actually shows you.
Infrared thermography measures skin surface temperature — it doesn't measure inflammation directly. But surface temperature is a reasonable proxy for local blood flow, and case documentation from grounding researchers has recorded warmer, more uneven surface-temperature patterns before grounding shifting to cooler, more evenly distributed patterns after several nights of sleeping grounded.

Worth reading correctly: this is case-report evidence — documented single- or few-subject before/after imaging, not a blinded, controlled trial with a comparison group. It's genuinely useful as a visual illustration of the circulation changes reported elsewhere in this dossier (see the one-hour facial blood flow study above), but it carries less statistical weight than the randomized studies cited in the Evidence Pack. Warmer, more even surface temperature is consistent with improved local blood flow — it is not, by itself, a measurement of "inflammation neutralized" or evidence about internal organ function, hormone levels, or blood sugar.

Research hasn't measured every single hour — studies cluster around a handful of session lengths. Here's what's actually been documented at each checkpoint, honestly labeled.

13 · Sleep
The most important time
to ground is when you sleep.
You spend roughly a third of your life asleep — the longest single stretch of uninterrupted contact your body ever has with anything. That's exactly why the original grounding sleep study remains the most-cited piece of research in the field.
Participants who slept grounded for eight weeks showed progressively more normalized 24-hour cortisol rhythms — cortisol dropping in the evening and rising appropriately in the morning — alongside improved subjective ratings of sleep quality, pain, and stress.

Why cortisol matters for sleep: it's your body's primary wake-drive hormone. A healthy rhythm is high in the morning and low at night; when that rhythm is disrupted — by stress, screens, irregular schedules — falling and staying asleep gets harder. The study above didn't measure melatonin directly, so we don't claim a melatonin effect here; the documented finding is specifically about cortisol rhythm and subjective sleep quality.
The same overnight approach has since been tested in more specific populations — including a small 2022 pilot study on grounding and sleep quality in patients with mild Alzheimer's disease. It's a preliminary study in a narrow population, not a general claim, but it shows the research is still actively extending into new groups.

14 · Skin & complexion
What better circulation
can do for your skin.
Skin is the body's largest organ, and like every other tissue, it depends on blood flow to deliver oxygen and nutrients and clear away waste. The grounding research most relevant to skin isn't a skincare study in the conventional sense — it's circulation research that happens to have visible implications for complexion.
Using laser Doppler imaging, grounded participants showed measurably improved facial blood flow regulation compared to a sham-grounded control group.

A separate 2021 study went further, combining localized grounding with conductive skincare topicals and measuring facial microcirculation directly. The researchers found grounding increased blood flow to treated areas, proposing that this could support better nutrient absorption and tissue repair when paired with a normal skincare routine — not as a replacement for it.

Read this one carefully: the evidence here is real but early — small studies, short sessions, facial circulation as the measured outcome rather than any specific skin condition. It's reasonable to describe grounding as supportive of the circulation that skin depends on. It is not evidence for treating acne, eczema, or wrinkles, and we don't make those claims.
15 · Bare earth vs. the mat
Same principle.
A few honest differences.
Standing barefoot on grass, sand, or damp soil connects you straight to the earth's own charge. The mat connects you to that same charge indirectly, through your home's grounding wire. The underlying physics — equalizing your body's charge with the earth — is identical. The path there is not.

One important nuance from the research literature itself: a home outlet's grounding pin is an equipment-grounding conductor, built for electrical safety — not always a true, low-resistance path into the earth. Most studies of indoor grounding products test their setups directly against a dedicated ground rod for this reason, and recommend the same for critical use. Four steps to getting grounded.
Test the outlet
Use the included Earth Tester to confirm your wall socket is properly grounded before your first use. If you're in an older home, we recommend having a licensed electrician confirm your earthing.
Snap & plug
Attach the snap end of the cord to the mat, then insert the 3-pin plug into the outlet you just confirmed is grounded. Keep the switch off until the plug is fully seated.
Make contact
Place the mat under your feet, arms, back, neck, or shoulders while sleeping or relaxing. Direct skin contact works fastest; thin natural fabric works too, once sweat forms a conductive channel.
